Precedent library

A precedent library is a firm's collection of approved template documents and clauses that lawyers use as the starting point for new drafting.

What it means for a UK law firm

A precedent library holds the firm's agreed drafting positions. A precedent library is only as useful as its upkeep: each precedent needs an owner, a review date and a clear status, so that nobody drafts from a version overtaken by a change in law or practice.

A precedent library becomes more useful with AI that can search clauses by meaning and draft from the firm's approved precedents rather than from generic text. AI also raises the cost of an out-of-date precedent library, because outdated wording is reused faster.

Example

Illustrative scenario

After a change in the law affecting a standard clause, the firm's knowledge lawyer updates the precedent and withdraws the old version, so the next draft produced from the precedent library uses the new wording.

How Chancery handles it

Chancery's precedent library collects your best documents in one searchable library, with an approval queue, categories and ratings. Nothing joins the library until an administrator approves it, and a strong matter document can be promoted to a precedent in one step; see Drafting.
