How Chancery Works

A platform that grows with your firm.

Every deployment starts with the platform — a legal assistant, precedent intelligence, matter intelligence, and intelligent search. Then add practice area modules for specialist workflows tailored to how your teams actually work.

Modules

Private Client

IHT 400 automation, estate planning intelligence, and advisory research — purpose-built for Private Client solicitors.

More Practice Areas

Additional practice area modules are on the roadmap. The platform is designed to support any area of law.

Featured Module

Spend your time on the estate planning. Not the IHT 400.

You didn't qualify to fill in 443 form fields. The IHT 400 is painstaking, high-stakes detail work. Chancery's Private Client module handles the complexity so your solicitors can focus on the advice.

Advisory Intelligence

Research across legislation, HMRC guidance, and case law. Scenario modelling for estate planning strategies. Anti-avoidance flags before they become problems.

IHT 400 Automation

A 4-phase workflow with human checkpoints at every stage. Deterministic maths engine for relief and tax calculations. Full audit trail from data gathering to submission.

Deterministic, not generative. The calculations use a rules engine, not AI. The maths is exact, with human-in-the-loop approval at every step.

The platform foundation.

Intelligence runs through the entire platform — from the moment a document is uploaded, through how it's stored and organised, to how your team searches, questions, and builds on your firm's collective knowledge. Practice area modules add specialist intelligence and workflow automation.

Legal Assistant

Ask Chancery questions in plain English. It answers from your firm’s own documents with cited sources — not generic training data.

Search

Five scopes, one interface. Search within a matter, across all your matters, your firm’s precedents, or any combination.

Document Processing

Upload a file and Chancery reads it, understands its structure, extracts key terms, dates and parties, and makes every detail searchable. Nothing to tag. Nothing to configure.

Precedent Intelligence

Your firm’s best work, approved and version-controlled. Searchable by anyone, from day one.

Matter Intelligence

Structured records for every engagement. Documents, correspondence, key dates and parties — all connected to their context.

Administration

Your firm, your rules. User management, feature controls, approval workflows, and a full audit trail.

LEGAL ASSISTANT

Your legal assistant.

Powered by Precedent Intelligence — semantic search across your firm's precedents and matters.

Upload a contract, a lease, a set of board minutes — any legal document. Then ask Chancery a question in plain English. It reads the document, finds the answer, and tells you exactly where it found it.

This is not a general-purpose chatbot. Chancery answers from your documents. Every response includes the source section, a direct quote from the text, and page references where available. If the answer is not in your documents, it tells you so. As with any AI tool, you should verify the output — but Chancery gives you the citations to do exactly that.

Combine insights across matters and precedents in a single conversation. Compare clauses from different transactions. Find patterns across your firm's entire body of work.

Plain English questions

No search syntax to learn. Ask questions the way you'd ask a colleague. "What is the notice period?" "Who are the parties?" "Does this lease contain a break clause?"

Cited answers with page references

Every answer links back to the source section in your document, with page references where available. Click through to verify. Nothing is taken on faith.

Defined terms resolved automatically

When Chancery finds a reference to a defined term (like "the Property" or "Completion Date"), it looks up the definition and includes it in its answer. No more flipping between clauses and the definitions schedule.

Cross-reference awareness

If clause 5.2 refers to Schedule 3, Chancery understands the relationship and can explain how the two interact.

Conversation history

Pick up where you left off. Your previous questions and answers are saved, so you can build on earlier analysis without starting again.

Human-in-the-loop guardrails

Chancery is designed to support your judgement, not replace it. Every answer includes source citations so you can verify before you act. Responses are clearly marked as AI-generated, and your firm can configure disclaimers, topic restrictions, and approval workflows to keep a solicitor in the loop at every stage.

Search

Five ways to search. One interface.

Chancery does not force you into a single way of working. Depending on what you need, you can search at different levels:

1

Single Matter

Search within one matter's documents. Ideal for reviewing a specific transaction or case file.

“Summarise the indemnity provisions across all documents in this matter.”

2

All Your Matters

Search across every matter you have access to. Find that clause you drafted last year without remembering which matter it was in.

“Find all employment contracts with non-compete clauses exceeding 12 months.”

3

Precedent Library

Search your firm's approved templates and model documents.

“Show me our standard commercial lease for retail premises.”

4

Combined Search

Search across a specific matter and the Precedent Library together. Compare your current draft against approved firm precedents, or combine insights from multiple matters to find patterns in how your firm has handled similar issues.

“How does the limitation of liability in this matter compare to our standard position? Show me how we handled this in similar transactions last year.”

5

General Legal Assistant

Ask general legal knowledge questions when you need background context — without accessing any documents.

“What are the key differences between a share sale and an asset sale?”

Document Processing

Upload a document. Chancery does the rest.

When you upload a file, Chancery doesn't just store it — it reads it, understands its structure, and makes every detail searchable. There's nothing to tag, no metadata forms to fill in, and no waiting for someone in IT to process it.

Text extraction

PDFs and Word documents are converted into searchable text. Scanned PDFs are also supported — text is extracted automatically.

Structure-aware processing

Chancery preserves the structure of your document. It knows the difference between a heading, a clause, a schedule, and a definition. Search results tell you which section the answer came from.

Document type recognition

Chancery identifies what kind of document it is: a share purchase agreement, a lease, an employment contract, a board resolution. This happens automatically without you labelling anything.

Party extraction

The names and roles of parties (buyer, seller, landlord, tenant, employer, employee) are identified and stored.

Key date extraction

Completion dates, notice periods, break dates, and other important dates are pulled out and made searchable.

Governing law and jurisdiction

Chancery identifies which law governs the document and which courts have jurisdiction.

Defined terms

Legal definitions are extracted and stored separately, so they can be referenced when answering questions about other parts of the document.

Cross-references

Internal references (to clauses, schedules, annexes, exhibits) are detected and mapped, so Chancery understands how different parts of the document relate to each other.

Supported file types for AI search: PDF, Word (.docx), and plain text files. Scanned PDFs are also supported — Chancery extracts text automatically.

Additional file types for upload and storage: Excel (.xlsx), images (PNG, JPG), and other common formats can be uploaded to matters for storage and reference, but are not currently indexed for AI search.

Precedent Library

Your firm's best work. Always available.

Every firm has institutional knowledge. The problem is it lives in people's personal folders, email attachments, and the memories of senior partners. When someone leaves, that knowledge goes with them — we call this silent attrition, and it is the number one unsolved problem in legal technology.

60% of UK lawyers rank precedent repositories as their top technology priority. Not AI. Not compliance. Not e-discovery. Precedent repositories. Yet nothing on the market is purpose-built to solve this.

Chancery's Precedent Library changes this. Every template, clause, draft letter, and approved document — uploaded, organised, and version-controlled. Your firm's collective work product becomes a searchable, reusable asset instead of something that lives in one partner's head.

Upload or promote

Upload documents directly to the library, or promote a document from an existing matter when it's good enough to become a firm-wide template.

Approval workflow

An administrator reviews every submission before it becomes available to the firm. Nothing goes into the library without approval.

Categories and tags

Organise precedents by practice area, document type, or any custom category your firm defines.

Ratings

Solicitors can rate precedents from 1 to 5, so the most useful templates naturally rise to the top.

Copy to matter

Found the right precedent? Copy it directly into your current matter with one click. Start from a proven foundation instead of a blank page.

AI-searchable

Every approved precedent is automatically indexed and searchable through Chancery's AI chat. Ask "show me our standard NDA for commercial transactions" and get an immediate result.

Matter Intelligence

Organise your work. Control who sees it.

Every piece of work in Chancery is organised within a matter — structured records of documents, correspondence, key dates, parties, and status. Work stays connected to its context. When a solicitor leaves or the fee earner changes, the knowledge stays. When a new joiner arrives, they can pick up where their predecessor left off. No more folders of loose files. No more lost context.

File storage

Upload documents to a matter and they're automatically processed, indexed, and made searchable. No manual tagging required.

Team sharing

Share a matter with specific colleagues or entire teams. Assign roles to control who can view, edit, or manage.

Role-based access

Three levels of access per matter:

  • Manager — Full control. Can manage team access, upload files, edit details, and archive.
  • Editor — Can upload and delete files, edit matter details, and add comments.
  • Viewer — Read-only. Can view documents and add comments, but nothing more.

Client linking

Associate each matter with a client record for easy filtering and organisation.

Comments

Add notes to matters. Choose whether a comment is private (just you), shared with your team, or visible to the whole firm.

Reference numbers

Assign your firm's own reference numbers to matters for easy identification alongside Chancery's internal references.

Administration

Your firm. Your rules.

Firm administrators have a dedicated dashboard to manage users, control features, and monitor usage.

User management

Add and remove users. Assign firm-level roles (Owner, Admin, Member). Manage team memberships.

Feature controls

Enable or disable AI chat, choose which search scopes are available, set custom legal disclaimers, and define topic guidelines.

Precedent management

Approve or reject precedent submissions. Manage category taxonomies. Monitor precedent usage across the firm.

Audit trail

Every action in the system is logged. Who accessed what, when, and from where. Audit logs are immutable — they cannot be edited or deleted by any user, including administrators.

Invitations

Invite new users by email. They sign in with their existing Microsoft account and are immediately part of your firm.

See it in action with your own documents.
