Matter workspace

A matter workspace is a single place holding everything for one client matter, such as its documents, drafts, AI outputs, risks and comments, with access limited to the people working on it.

What it means for a UK law firm

A matter workspace keeps AI work tied to the matter it belongs to. That supports client confidentiality, because only the matter team can see it, and supervision, because drafts and reviews sit beside the documents they rely on.

A matter workspace should follow how the firm already works: the firm's own matter references, the client the matter belongs to, and roles that decide who can edit and who can only view. When the matter closes, the workspace should be archived in line with the firm's retention policy.

Example

Illustrative scenario

Two teams in a firm act for clients whose interests could conflict, and the firm has put an information barrier in place. Each team works in its own matter workspace, with access only to its own client's documents.

How Chancery handles it

In Chancery, each matter brings together its documents, drafts, workflows, risks and comments. You can give colleagues Manager, Editor or Viewer access, link the matter to its client, use your firm's own reference numbers and archive the matter when it closes; see Matters.
